alb3680279 Bellona. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 50 x 38 3/8 in. (127 x 97.5 cm). Date: 1633.Rembrandt's sober and powerful depiction of Bellona, the Roman goddess of war, was perhaps intended to suggest the new Dutch Republic's readiness to repel foreign forces. Images of Mars and his sister Bellona occasionally decorated the headquarters of civic guard companies. The shield, with its frightful face of Medusa, was added at a late stage of work, probably in response to seeing a version of Rubens's well-known painting of a severed Medusa's head. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3682334 Portrait of a Man, probably a Member of the Van Beresteyn Family. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 44 x 35 in. (111.8 x 88.9 cm). Date: 1632.The man is most likely Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586-1638), a wealthy burgomaster of Delft. His restrained pose and sober expression contrast with the animation and accessibility that Rembrandt usually attributed to members of Amsterdam society. At the time, portraits in Delft and in the neighboring court city of The Hague were remarkably conservative, adhering to a tradition that went back to Spanish royal portraits of the mid-1500s. Rembrandt is known to have painted a few portraits in The Hague during 1632. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3632665 Rembrandt's Son Titus (1641-1668). Artist: Style of Rembrandt (17th century or later). Dimensions: 31 1/8 x 23 1/4 in. (79.1 x 59.1 cm).The sentimental subject of Rembrandt's son Titus, who died one year before his father, was a favorite of Rembrandt forgers, who occassionally failed to coordinate the date on their canvas with the style of execution and the sitter's age. The present painter has been more careful, evidently referring to an original portrait of Titus such as the one of about 1657 in The Wallace Collection, London, and, for the costume, to a self-portrait or other Rembrandt painting of the period; the same pose and placement of the figure in the composition occur in Rembrandt's Self Portrait of 1652 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The boy's bright eyes and sweetly smiling lips seem as superficial in expression as they are in form. The technique overall might be compared with that of the Man with a Beard (89.15.3). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3672001 Man in Oriental Costume ("The Noble Slav"). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 60 1/8 x 43 3/4in. (152.7 x 111.1cm). Date: 1632.Compared with Rembrandt's formal portraits of the same year, this picture is remarkable for its brilliant brushwork and dramatic illumination. It was probably painted shortly after he moved from his native Leiden to Amsterdam, and in its exotic subject and style was surely intended for a knowledgeable collector. Pictures of imaginary Persian, Ottoman, or otherwise "Oriental" princes were popular at the time because of new trade contacts between the Dutch and the Middle East. However, the model is a Dutchman who appears in other paintings by Rembrandt and by artists in his circle. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3621218 Pilate Washing His Hands. Artist: Style of Rembrandt (Dutch, 17th century). Dimensions: 51 1/4 x 65 3/4 in. (130.2 x 167 cm). Date: probably 1660s.Critical opinions of this picture have varied considerably since about 1905, when Wilhelm von Bode described it as "a somewhat abnormal work" by Rembrandt. However, most scholars since the 1940s have dated the painting to the 1660s and assigned it to an anonymous pupil. The composition is reminiscent of mature works by Rembrandt but the Rembrandtesque surface effects fail to convey anything like the master's command of illumination and modelling. The name of his only known pupil of the 1660s, Arent de Gelder, has been put forward speculatively. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608426 Christ Crucified between the Two Thieves: The Three Crosses. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: Plate: 15 x 17 1/4 in. (38.1 x 43.8 cm)Sheet: 15 1/8 x 17 7/16 in. (38.4 x 44.3 cm)Mount: 22 x 28 in. (55.9 x 71.1 cm). Date: 1653.The Three Crosses, one of Rembrandt's finest works in any medium, represents the culmination of his virtuosity as a printmaker. He drew on the copperplate entirely in drypoint which allowed him to fully exploit the velvety areas of burr raised by the drypoint tool as it cut into the copper. When Rembrandt created this impression, he deliberately left ink on the printing plate; it lightly veils the figures standing at the foot of the cross on the right; a thicker layer almost completely covers the bushes along the right edge. By creatively inking the copperplate, Rembrandt in a certain sense painted each impression. Each time he printed the copperplate he created a unique work. He further varied impressions by printing them on different supports; this impression is printed on vellum, which infuses the composition with a warm light. Vellum, less absorbent than paper, holds ink on the surface, softening lines and enhancing the richness of entire effect. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. alb3652049 The Toilet of Bathsheba. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 22 1/2 x 30 in. (57.2 x 76.2 cm). Date: 1643.King David, barely discernible atop the palace in the background, sees Bathsheba bathing and sends for her, despite the fact that she is married to his loyal soldier Uriah (Samuel 2:2-5). The king later arranges for Uriah to be killed in battle. The painting is one of a few dating from the 1640s in which Rembrandt revives his early, precisely descriptive manner in order to produce fine "cabinet pictures" for collectors. The others are also religious but not erotic, as this one was surely intended to be. The original state of the badly worn background may be judged from a reproductive engraving of 1763. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3610724 Christ with a Staff. Artist: Follower of Rembrandt (Dutch, third quarter 17th century). Dimensions: 37 1/2 x 32 1/2 in. (95.3 x 82.6 cm). This impressive picture was clearly inspired by Rembrandt's style of the 1660s and was conceivably painted in his workshop. The broad, uniform application of paint and rather decorative use of strokes and scratches imitate some of Rembrandt's surface effects but fail to achieve his sense of volume, various textures, and atmosphere. A few scholars have suggested the manner of execution is similar to that of Arent de Gelder (1645-1727), Rembrandt's last important pupil. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3649890 Man with a Magnifying Glass. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 36 x 29 1/4 in. (91.4 x 74.3 cm). Date: early 1660s.The costume and pose of the man in this magnificent late work by Rembrandt were inspired by Raphael's celebrated portrait of Baldassare Castiglione (Musée du Louvre, Paris), which Rembrandt studied when it appeared at auction in Amsterdam in 1639. The man who ran the auction was Pieter Haringh (1609-1685), who is very likely the sitter here; his features are known from a Rembrandt etching of 1655. The magnifying glass would have been used in evaluating jewelry, silver, paintings, and other luxury goods. The pendant portrait (14.40.622) shows his wife. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3665260 Hendrickje Stoffels (1626-1663). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 30 7/8 x 27 1/8 in. (78.4 x 68.9 cm). Date: mid-1650s.The sitter is probably Hendrickje Stoffels, who was the painter's companion from about 1650 until her early death in 1663. Rembrandt's responsibility for this portrait has never been doubted, although the signature and date appear to have been added by another hand. The picture may have been painted at different intervals in the years about 1655-60, and it may be unfinished in the drapery and hand. The paint surface is badly abraded, making judgments of quality and of Rembrandt's intentions difficult. It seems likely, however, that the artist had Titian in mind: for example, his famous painting (known from many copies) of the repentant Magdalen. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3669990 Portrait of a Woman, probably a Member of the Van Beresteyn Family. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 44 x 35 in. (111.8 x 88.9 cm). Date: 1632.This portrait is a pendant to the Portrait of a Man (29.100.3). If the man is Cornelis van Beresteyn, then the woman must be his second wife, Corvina van Hofdyck (1602-1667). Her pose, including the precise positions of the hands (one holding an ostrich fan), repeats that of her mother-in-law as depicted by Jacob Willemsz. Delff in 1592. Rembrandt's pair portraits appear to have conformed in design to a dynastic ensemble of portraits that originally hung in the Van Beresteyn family home in Delft. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3664108 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 32 7/8 x 25 3/8 in. (83.5 x 64.5 cm). Date: ca. 1655-60.This portrait is generally considered to be by Rembrandt, and is somewhat less uniformly thought to date from the 1650s. Both questions are made more difficult by the condition of the picture: the hands, the body, and the hat are badly abraded. The face is fairly well preserved. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3668337 Young Woman with a Pearl Necklace. Artist: Copy after Willem Drost (Dutch, late 17th or early 18th century). Dimensions: 33 1/8 x 24 1/2 in. (84.1 x 62.2 cm).The sitter bears a resemblance to Hendrickje Stoffels (born about 1625-26, died 1663), Rembrandt's common-law wife and the subject of a number of his portraits, one of which is in the Metropolitan. The picture is the work of a pupil of Rembrandt, and the strong light striking the face suggests that it may be by Barent Fabritius. Another version is in Dresden. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
